Pulmonary Vascular Disease Program
Pulmonary hypertension is high blood pressure in the arteries in the lungs. Because of this, the heart has to work harder to pump blood through the lungs. Initially, patients with pulmonary hypertension only feel out of breath when they exert themselves. However, over time, the heart can weaken causing these patients to feel short of breath even with minimal activity.
Northwestern Medicine’s Pulmonary Vascular Disease
Program at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute is among the largest and most advanced treatment and research programs in the country for treating patients with pulmonary hypertension. Research efforts include expanding treatment options that are aimed to increase patient survival and improve quality of life.
Together, director Stuart Rich, MD, and associate director, Michael J. Cuttica, MD, lead the Chicago-based program offering high-quality and personalized patient care through a dedicated team of nurses and five faculty physicians, all with specialized expertise. The goal of the Pulmonary Vascular Disease Program is to enable patients to effectively manage their disease with the best quality of life possible.
Dr. Rich is a true pioneer in the field of pulmonary hypertension. His contributions and discoveries are world-renowned. Over the years, he has led and played an integral part in the development of many new treatments for pulmonary hypertension. Dr. Rich has published hundreds of book chapters and clinical articles.
